Prominent Alphas

As members of this great fraternity, we are all important and successful in our own right. We are all men that our families can be proud of. We're leaders in our communities, schools and religious organizations.

It is because of these facts that when people ask for names of famous members of Alpha Phi Alpha it is not hard to do so. Alpha Phi Alpha is represented in government, actors, musicians, educators and atheletes. Many also have been immortalized on US commemorative stamps.

Emanuel Cleaver, II

Bro. Cleaver founded a branch of the Southern Chrstian Leadership Conference in Kansas City, MO. He served as city councilman in Kasas City from 1979-1991. Bro. Cleaver was the first African American mayor in Kansas City and served from 1991-1999.

Paul Robeson

Bro. Robeson was a reknown athelete, actor, singer and activist. He was honored with a commemorative stamp in east Germany in 1983 and later on US postage stamps in 2004.

Art Shell

Bro Shell was the first African American head coach in modern NFL history (only second to Friz Pollard in 1921). Shell participated in 24 playoff contests, including Super Bowls XI and XV, and was name to eith Pro Bowls. As the Raider's coach, he was Coach of the Year in 1990 and currently serves as senior vice president for the NFL.

Charlie Rangel

Bro Rangel has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1971, representing the Fifteenth Congressional District of New York.

John Johnson

Bro Johnson was the founder of the Johnson Publishing Company that includes media outlets such as Ebony and Jet. He was the first African American to appear on the Forbes 400 Rich List.

Lenny Wilkens

Bro Wilkens Drafted to the St. Louis Hawks in 1960, he went on to play for the SuperSonics, Cavaliers and Trail Blazers. He went on to coach the Trail Blazers and later coached the Supersonics to their only NBA Championship in 1979. He retired from coaching in 2005 with the most wins and the most losses in NBA history.

Cornel West

Bro. West is a prominent American scholar that enrolled in Harvard University at the age of 17 and graduated in three years, magna cum laude. He went on to Princeton for graduate school and in 1984, to Yale Divinity School. He is a reknown author as well as a political activist.

Garrett Morgan

Bro. Morgan was an inventor that patented the traffic light, created the straightening comb and invented a respiratory protective hood (or type of gas mask).
